The very first time I led worship was at the age of 15. Originally I was supposed to be co-leading, however, my co-leaders kids were sick and she dropped out… I had to learn early on the importance of teamwork, the power of non self-reliance, the grace of God for my lack of preparation. I was left in a sink or swim situation. Fortunately I rose to the occasion and since then I’ve worship led on many different platforms and in different denominations and in different countries, large stage or no stage, with practice or unprepared pre-service shambles, with healthy teams and not so healthy teams, nonetheless I have always seen God’s powerful presence fill the room when we truly come before Him in worship: in spirit and in truth.
Since then I have learned a lot. So here are some key things I hope will encourage you in your setting:
- Preparation is important but can only get you so far – rely on the Holy Spirit. He is in the preparation and in the moment.
- Leadership means you have never really ‘made it’, you’re always on a journey.
- Learning your lyrics is essential. I’ve stumbled way too many times – it’s distracting for everyone involved.
- Be confident in what you have been entrusted with. Lead with integrity and authenticity.
- Above all things your heart before God is more important than how clear, perfected or pure your voice or instrument may sound.
- If God has given you a gift: guard it & grow it.
- Be grateful for your team members. Make them your second family.
- Be grateful for the opportunity and privilege to serve alongside such creativity and beautiful hearts – love people where they are at.
- Have a spirit of anticipation to see how God will move through the gifts He has given us.
- The platform has no room for your ego. Always, always always give ALL the praise and glory back to God alone. It is He who we do all this for anyway – if it’s not then check your heart.
